VINEYARD NOTES

Over the years we have grown to know our Estate Vineyard like a parent knows its children. Double planted on the terraces, with elevations from 800 to 1000 feet, it enjoys every exposure & varying soil depths. Therefore, each section of the vineyard has something unique to offer. Each has to be raised to support its strengths. Consequently, we gently vinify and age the 5 harvest lots separately. These become the blending pieces of Clark‐Claudon Estate Cab.

It is amazing that 5 such distinctive 100% Cabernets can come from a contiguous 18.5 acre vineyard. But it is this distinction that gives our Estate wines their complexity while also revealing their common foundation. Our ‘05 Vintage celebrates the joining of a beautiful season and place.

TASTING NOTES

The 2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, darker than the most recent vintages, presents with heightened aromas of cassis, violets, fine cedar, & bright black cherries. This full bodied wine fills front, middle and back pallet with round, complex layers of fruit, spice and fine textured French Oak. Give this wine a chance to breath or allow it to evolve for a long, long time; well balanced, elegant and perfectly integrated, it leaves a long signature finish of roasted chocolate; Yes, 2005 was a very good year! Drink now-2025.

The 2005 is the first Estate Cabernet influenced by new winemaker, Douglas Danielak. Instrumental in making the final winemaking & blending decisions, his touch is evident in this classically beautiful Cabernet.

This is a fantastic wine. A Napa cab has to be really good for me to like it and Clark-Claudon hits the mark. This wine was sent to me as part of my California Wine Club Signature Series shipment and kudos to them for including such a fantastic, small-lot producer like Clark-Claudon in their club.  This wine runs about $50-$75 and later vintages are in the $80 range so it is not inexpensive by any means. Part of the price is due to the so-called "Napa premium" as wines from Napa tend to garner premium prices because of the region's reputation for superior vineyards and winemaking. But if you want to try a fine Napa cabernet and are willing to splurge a bit, Clark-Claudon is worth checking out.

This family-owned vineyard in the northeast mountains of Napa Valley has produced a sensational 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. Its dense ruby/purple hue is followed by a Pauillac-like perfume of spice box, cedar, black currants, and subtle background oak. The wine is full-bodied with sweet but noticeable tannins, and a savory, expansive mouthfeel. Drink this beauty now and over the next 15-20 years.
